Arum

Arum is an old world genus found from western Europe, right across central Europe and central Asia as far east as Afghanistan. To the south it reaches North Africa and Israel. The genus is instantly recognisable, despite varying in colour from pale lime green through yellow, rusty red, deep purple and black.

Cultivation is simple in a well-drained loam in sun or very light shade. Many leaf up in the autumn and overwinter in the green state, so siting is worth thinking about carefully in cold areas.

Those offered are almost all hardy here, out in the garden and in time they can become very deep seated and they can sit below freezing level, making them hardy even in very cold areas. As with most Aroids they are not cold hardy, in pots where they can freeze through.

Order from Autumn list only.

Arum alpinum alpinum

VV.TD.88 Arum alpinum alpinum

Garden hardy here and setting its attractive red berry-spikes freely.

Arum alpinum besserianum

Arum alpinum besserianum

Described 140 years ago but hardly known in cultivation. Plain green leaves below a slender green spathe, around a deeper purplish spadix.

These are tubers raised from an original Ukrainian collection made by the late Vladimir Vasak. Well drained, sun or shade, and very easy to please.

Arum byzantinum

Arum byzantinum

Rare in cultivation and even rarer than the name which has been wildly misapplied in horticulture where several forms of the totally dissimilar italicum are wrongly attributed to this species.

Slender, whitish-cream spathes, with a purplish basal stain and a red purple line around the edge, wrap around strongly club-shaped spadices of yellow. The can be stained with rich brown-purple, especially with age.

Restricted to a small area of the Balkan Peninsula between Bulgaria and Istanbul where it apparently grows in the same damp soils which suit it well in cultivation. Few.

Arum byzantinumarubyzbyz £7.00

Arum creticum

FCC form Arum creticum

Plain green leaves and superb primrose yellow spathes with a butter-yellow spadix, all with a pleasant rose scent. This is the brightest coloured Arum and one of the few with a nice smell!

Fully hardy here and an excellent garden plant for a sunny site, in a well-drained fertile soil. Eastern Mediterranean.

Arum creticumarucretic £9.50

Arum cyrenaicum

Arum cyrenaicum

Green spathes with a large purple-rose interior around a darker red-pink spadix, scentless.

Trial plants have over-wintered well both here and in Holland, and this lovely plant is considerably more hardy than its Libyan localities initially suggested. Ours is from Cretan material.

Arum cyrenaicumarucyrcyr £8.50

Arum dioscoridis dioscoridis

Arum dioscoridis dioscoridis

A lovely horticultural stock with large green spathes which are internally marbled with satiny black leopard blotching over a paler green ground.

Well-drained, sunny spot in a loam based soil, planted 12-15cm deep to inhibit increase and promote flowering.

Arum dioscoridis dioscoridisarudiodio £3.50

Arum dioscoridis liepoldtii

Arum dioscoridis liepoldtii

Although this form is contained botanically within the variety dioscoridis, it is horticulturally most distinct.

The spathe has a black base that gives way to a very evenly spaced marbled and blotched lining, of black over green. The spadix is sandy coloured at the apex. A most attractive cultivar.

Arum dioscoridis liepoldtiiarudiolie £8.50

Arum dioscoridis philistaeum

HKEP.9263 Arum dioscoridis philistaeum

A rare Turkish form of the species.

Strong growing with attractive, glossy foliage and large spathes, with a solid, self-coloured purple-black velvet interior where the blotches have merged. The spadix is also black.

A showy plant, sharing some characters with A. palaestinum.

Arum dioscoridis philistaeumarudiophi £6.00

Arum dioscoridis spectabile

JCA.5396A Arum dioscoridis spectabile

This is the familiar name for the largest, darkest, showiest form. Green spathes with confluent smooth velvety jet-black blotches inside and a black spadix.

Sunny, well-drained site. This has been raised from one tuber, a rogue in Dracunculus vulgaris.

Arum dioscoridis spectabilearudiospe £6.50

Arum dioscoridis syriacum

Arum dioscoridis syriacum

This new stock, originally found by Prof. Speta in Cyprus was originally offered as 'cyprium' however P. Boyce has confirmed that it is in fact var syriacum.

The spathes in this form are lightly speckled and stippled in black and deepest violet around their edges.

The leaves are lightly marked with white clouding in zones around the midrib.

Arum dioscoridis syriacumarudiocyp £4.50

Arum elongatum

RS.274/87 Arum elongatum

A rare Russian species with remarkable deep purplish-red spathes. These are unique in their colouring and are borne in April and May over plain deep green sagittate leaves.

Despite its rarity, it is best in the garden, and fully hardy here.

The tuber on this stock is of the ‘vertical’ type, as it should be. Raised from a stock originally found in the Krasnodar SSR.

Arum elongatumarueloelo £9.00

Arum euxinum

Arum euxinum

A dwarf species from mountains around the Black Sea coast of Northern Turkey; a cold, wet region, thus this is both a very hardy, and a water-tolerant plant.

The dark green, compact foliage is borne with the 'flowers' in May. In these the spathe is compact, scentless and pinched into a waist. The colour is pale green, stained purple at the edges and base, with an interior of pale cream or white, varyingly marked with rich purple towards the tip.

Arum euxinumarueuxeux £13.50

Arum nigrum Trebinje

AH.8613 Arum nigrum Trebinje

Raised from a separate population found much further south, some years later by Antoine Hoog (the H of CEH).

This is a similarly good form with stunning black spathes. Cross fertile with the CEH524.

Arum nigrum Trebinjearunigtre £6.50

Arum nigrum Zadar

CEH.524 Arum nigrum Zadar

This species is very restricted in its wild range, in coastal Croatia but grows strongly and well in cultivation in the UK making deep seated, strongly perennial clumps which flower well, outside.

Strong and robust growths with plain (unspotted) deep green leaves and pure, solid, unbroken, satin-like, jet black spathes around a slightly paler, yet still-dark spadix in May. The sheer intensity of the black has to be seen, whilst the pungent dung scent is also an experience you should attempt to share with friends.

Well drained sunny sites are recommended but it thrives in most situations, including heavy clay.

Arum nigrum Zadararunignig £6.00

Arum orientale

VV.RR.55 Arum orientale

Shiny, dark green, spear-shaped leaves, which are present with the large green to purplish-brown infused spathes with a white centre. These are very decorative, with their deep purple-brown spadices.

Easy in the garden, hardy and readily grown. Importantly our plants have horizontal tubers which distinguishes it from A. elongatum even during dormancy. Crimea.
