Arum

Arum is an old world genus found from western Europe, right across central Europe and central Asia as far east as Afghanistan. To the south it reaches North Africa and Israel. The genus is instantly recognisable, despite varying in colour from pale lime green through yellow, rusty red, deep purple and black.

Cultivation is simple in a well-drained loam in sun or very light shade. Many leaf up in the autumn and overwinter in the green state, so siting is worth thinking about carefully in cold areas.

Those offered are almost all hardy here, out in the garden and in time they can become very deep seated and they can sit below freezing level, making them hardy even in very cold areas. As with most Aroids they are not cold hardy, in pots where they can freeze through.

Order from Autumn list only.

Arum palaestinum

Arum palaestinum

The largest Arum that we grow and a stately, imposing species making large attractive leaves and massive spathes on stems some 50cm tall. These spathes are solid, deep purple-black and fold back to display a spadix of the same intense colour.

This huge, black Arum is unique in being the only dark species that is pleasantly scented (of roses). Spectacular and rarely seen.

Well-drained, warm spot. The foliage is perhaps not freeze hardy in very cold climates, though it will take transient frosting with no damage and we have not lost plants here due to freezing, ever.

This has been scare for some years but this year we have a good stock and at last we are able to reduce the price substantially, we do urge you to try a very good plant indeed .

Arum pictum

Autumn flowering Arum pictum

The only autumn-flowering species.

Velvet-textured purple-black spathes with a black spadix in October. The leaves are delicately embossed with attractive, slightly silvery, veining.

Not to be confused with the wrongly named pictum form of Arum italicum. Majorca.

Arum purpureospathum

VV.CR.543 Arum purpureospathum

Large, polished, deep-green leaves around an enormous spathe of deep rich purple-black wrapped around a spadix of an even darker sháde. Very attractive for an Arum and this does not have a bad smell either, which is rare in the darker species.

A vigorous and very growable, quite new species for a sunny, well-drained lime soil in full sun. Hardy here outside, growing well and increasing pleasingly without being a menace and certainly spectacular in flower.

Arum rupicola rupicola

Arum rupicola rupicola

(conophalloides)

Large elongated open spathes, like a long 'flag' in purple to green-edged purple with a fat conical spadix of slate grey in the centre. Rich broad green leaves.

A very robust plant in one of its stockier, Turkish, incarnations raised from a very old EKB collection.

Arum rupicola virescens

Arum rupicola virescens

This subspecies has "flags" of green (so pale that it is virtually white) around a stout olive to purple conical spadix. More attractive than this sounds, assuming that you like Arum in the first place of course.

Grows here outside in a south-facing raised bed, in limey loam, unprotected summer or winter.
