Bulbs

A superb collection of bulbs from Africa and South America, best grown under glass in the UK.

You do not need a tropical glasshouse - frost-free glass is fine. Some of our collection are almost hardy and grow perfectly well in Mediterranean type temperatures. Others, such as some Nerine do perfectly well outside in the UK.

Cultivation varies, some grow on a Mediterranean cycle (mostly the South Africans), other prefer a summer damp, winter dry regime (many of our South Americans) but nothing is set in stone. Some of the arid land South African species can be persuaded to grow whenever suits you by judicious watering! More precise advice is given with each species.

Compost depends on species, your temperatures, your manner with the watering can etc. The essentials are perfect drainage and good air circulation. Rich soils are best, or feeding, especially with the arid-land species, for which there will only be a few watering (and thus feeding) opportunities in each season.
