Arisaema

Arisaema

The species that we offer are hardy plants for the open garden. They will almost all be happy in light, partial or dappled shade. Exceptions are noted.

Soil structure is important for long term success and they enjoy a fertile garden soil with an open porous structure that you can aid by incorporating plenty of organic matter. Lime or acid is acceptable preferably but drainage must be good. Again, organic matter worked in will create the correct open, airy, well-drained, soil structure. Provide a well drained soil and do not bother with elaborate pockets of gravel below the tuber, which simply creates a sump.

Plant with the rounded side of the tubers facing down, the small, sharp shoot pointing up and the top of the tuber 5-10cm below the soil surface.

Arisaema ciliatum liubaense

CT.369 Arisaema ciliatum liubaense

Collected as seed by Carla Theune at 3,600m in China many years ago. Over the years, we have trumpeted the distinct nature of this plant, in the face of those who inexplicably dismissed it as some form of A. consanguineum, which is totally incorrect.

It has now been described as A. ciliatum liubaense, by Dr. G. Gusman of Brussels.

A superb garden plant with striking molasses-brown spathes, strongly striped with white, over a circular parasol of leaves.

Excellent outside in the garden in a half-shaded spot in a humus-rich soil well drained but moisture retentive also. Once established this will increase nicely by tuber-bearing stolons and seed and make a reliable display.

Arisaema flavum abbreviatum

Arisaema flavum abbreviatum

The only truly yellow hardy Arisaema*. This is quite a small-flowered species but it grows well and has a lovely fragrance to balance the equation.

The blade is bright yellow with an imperial purple zone decorating the throat. This form makes slightly larger, more richly coloured spathes than the ‘old’ form. Nice cultivated (not imported) flowering sized tubers.

Garden in almost any soil, but ideally in a humus rich, well drained one in sun or light shade.

* it has been pointed out to us by a friend that the gorgeous, fragrant A.maxwelli has yellow forms, but that is a tropical species.
