Cypripedium

Some of the most beautiful Orchids but not the easiest. They are not recommended for beginners but they are not impossible, especially the garden hybrids. We guarantee the safe arrival of healthy plants, however after that it is up to you.

They like light or dappled shade and cool humidity. They enjoy moisture at the roots but are NOT, in any way, bog plants.

They appreciate open, well-drained soils, which do not dry out. Total dryness must be avoided, though they like to be a little drier in winter. All are fully hardy here.

Cypripedium resent disturbance and their roots bruise easily, so they must not be handled roughly. They must never dry out when planting, even a minute in direct sunshine can kill them months later.

Cypripedium Annegret

Cypripedium Annegret

(parviflorum x shanxiense)

Registered by Werner Frosch in 2010, this combines the supposedly difficult shanxiense with parviflorum. The latter is arguably the best parent there is when it comes to hybrids, imparting a superb vigour to all of its offspring.

The combination of the two inherits the poise and growability of parviflorum with the rich colouring of shanxiense (an eastern Russian species) to give a very good result for the garden.

Due to CITES permit costs of approx. £60 per item imposed by the UK Government these are not available for customers in Norway, Switzerland, USA, etc.

Cypripedium Baerbel Schmidt

Cypripedium Baerbel Schmidt

(macranthos x montanum)

Combining two very good parents of excellent colouring. The first is the multi-flowering (though somewhat intemperate), North American montanum with its white lip and superb deep russet, strongly spiralled petals.

The second is the Asian macranthos with large, deep pink flowers each with a lovely inflated lip.

The result, registered by Frank Schmidt in 2009 is a super plant with one to three deep red flowers, the lip inclining to cherry red, the tepals to a more orange influenced red.

Due to CITES permit costs of approx. £60 per item imposed by the UK Government these are not available for customers in Norway, Switzerland, USA, etc.

Cypripedium Boots

Cypripedium Boots

(calceolus flavum x montanum)

The original cross of Boots, registered in 2005, was made with the all yellow form of Cypripedium calceolus and the plants on offer here replicate that parentage.

It can thank its montanum parent for both its multi-flowered habit, its spiralling sepals and its superb colouring, whilst calceolus brings wider tepals, a stronger enhancement of their red colouring and introduces both a better lip shape and a more tolerant nature with regard to garden growth.

Due to CITES permit costs of approx. £60 per item imposed by the UK Government these are not available for customers in Norway, Switzerland, USA, etc.

Cypripedium calceolus

Cypripedium calceolus

Downy leaves up a 25cm stem topped by 1-3 flowers with deep russet-red petals around an inflated bright golden-yellow lip. The most exquisite of the lady-slipper orchids.

Best in a very well drained, open compost in light shade, lime is beneficial but NOT essential. (The scientific name is nothing to do with limestone, it means "little shoe").

The rewards of correct cultivation are tremendous. Superb plants, raised from seed of a long-cultivated European mainland stock. Totally artificially-propagated (and fully licensed) stock, as you will see when you examine the pristine, white, unblemished rhizomes.

Cypripedium calceolus x segawai

Cypripedium calceolus x segawai

A new and as yet unregistered hybrid between the European Lady-slipper, C. calceolus and the endemic, yellow-flowered Taiwanese segawai.

The European plant brings its good colouring and scent to the cross, the Asian parent brings a tendency to make more than one flower to a stem and superb yellow colouring, with broader tepals, a trait displayed in the progeny.

This cross is notable for the excellent striping and lining on its tepals.

Cypripedium californicum

Cypripedium californicum

A restricted endemic species found only in the Siskiyou mountains on the California - Oregon border region of the United States. It grows there at high altitide in wet places in bogs, marshes and roadside ditches, usually in areas that are flowing with water in June, during flowering, but less wet afterwards.

This is a wonderful lady slipper and one that we are often asked for, It has proven slow to raise from seed but once growing away it makes good plants which are very growable and not tricky, as once thought. There is no hardiness problem whatsoever with us, out plants have been frozen into the ground at -17°C and grown away beautifully afterwards.

Damp, peaty soil with good drainage and plenty of water moving through the compost.

Cypripedium Columbianum

Cypripedium Columbianum

montanum x pubescens

A fabulous and vigorous hybrid, long known in the North western Pacific states of the USA, in the wild and here recreated as an artificial cross.

Combines the multi-flowered habit of the temperamental montanum with the ease of growth of the larger-flowered pubescens to give a readily-grown, very garden worthy plant. The best of the montanum hybrids for garden use as it is the easiest to grow yet it looks the most like montanum! It has a white, or very pale yellow lip with deep brown tepals. Most stems have two or three flowers on stems 40-60cm tall and a large plant is nothing short of spectacular and this soon builds large clumps.

Cypripedium cordigerum

Cypripedium cordigerum

A large white lip, surrounded by elongated yellow-green tepals, with a top tepal noticeably broadened and long. Deliciously fragrant.

A lovely Himalayan species that is not difficult in a well-drained leafy soil in half shade, with or without lime.

After many years work we have a very few, very nice, strong cultivated divisions in excellent condition.

Cypripedium cordigerumcypcorcorXL £135.00

Cypripedium fasciolatum

Cypripedium fasciolatum

It is a particular pleasure to be able to offer this plant, as it is one of the most spectacular and largest-flowered in the whole genus.

Broad, ribbed leaves are topped by a flower which has a huge white or cream, sac-shaped lip, thinly edged with just enough burgundy lines to pick out the contrast. The lip is surrounded by tepals of light olive themselves striped and flecked with the same burgundy. There is variability both in the white-cream of the lip and in the tepal colour and veining intensity, but frankly none are bad.

This is a strong-growing species but slow to come on from seed, so that these, flowered, plants, at the same age as other species which have flowered, still look smaller. However it is a wonderful listing of plants raised in cultivation, from seed, totally legal and with no taint whatsoever of 'smuggled' about them.

Cypripedium fasciolatum x segawai

Cypripedium fasciolatum x segawai

In this cross the superb, multi-flowered Taiwanese segawai is crossed into the huge-lipped Chinese species, C. fasciolatum and the cross inherits not only the multi-flowering habit but the rich yellow colouring is undiminished.

The fasciolatum characters emerge in the larger lip with its characteristic fat bowl, yet pinched mouth and some of its red flecking both on the mouth of the lip and also on the tepals. A remarkably lovely hybrid.

Cypripedium formosanum

Cypripedium formosanum

One of the most successful species in cultivation. Once established, it is easy and will increase steadily.

Growth begins in very early spring and the plant is not likely to be available after the first week in March. The shoots unfold to reveal two broad, crinkled, decorative leaves from the centre of which unfurls a flower with a large, inflated, pastel pink, lip. This is surrounded by light apple green and pink petals.

Very lovely and a very good grower in a well-drained leaf-soil. Aim for a balance between good, free, drainage and moisture retention, using river sand and leafmould to balance unsuitable soils.

Ours are cultivated, propagated stock, freshly lifted for despatch and damp packed. They are a strong-growing form that increases well and flowers too. The photo is of our actual stock.

Cypripedium franchetii

Wide downy leaves below a large pale- to mid pink flower. This lovely plant has flattened but greatly inflated lips that turn up a little, like a snub-nose.

The lip colour is usually pink-purple lined with deeply set veins of a much more intense shade. The tepals are darker than the lip and are true rosy-purple, again lined, with the topmost sepal being the largest. This is wide and protrudes over and beyond the lip like an umbrella.

Superficially like macranthos, but clearly distinct in flower, with a different rhizome and above ground it is characterised by a densely hairy ovary and stem.

Due to permit costs of approx. £60 per item imposed by the UK Government these are not available for customers in Norway, Switzerland, USA, etc.

Cypripedium franchetiicypfraXL £55.00

Cypripedium Gabriela

Cypripedium Gabriela

(kentuckiense x fasciolatum)

Registered by Werner Frosch only in 2003 this is a hybrid with immense potential as it combines the two largest flowered species in the genus and they have a wonderful sympathetic colouring as well.

Both parents have large white or cream lips, and these combine their shapes to give a flask shaped creamy yellow lip which infuses to deeper yellow at the base. Both have long, large tepals of reddish-brown colourings. The kentuckiense used for the cross was a nice dark, well-coloured one, the fasciolatum was chosen for its splendid, long, dark sepals with plenty of maroon. The hybrid is half way between, lending a rich and sympathetic colour.

Vigorous and very hardy this has a bright future ahead of it. Cultivation is 'standard' with no foibles or quirks.

Cypripedium hotei-atsumorianum

Cypripedium hotei-atsumorianum

A superb form with large, well-marked flowers of intense colouring. In ours the flowers are inclined to violet more than red. The lines on the petals and lip are well defined. The petals are paler at the base where they surround a white staminode.

The Japanese name refers to Hotei, one of seven happiness gods in Japan (Shichi-fuku-jin). One of these, Hotei has a beer belly, the symbol of wealth, and so relates to the shape of the Cypripedium lip. A very attractive plant indeed.
