Deep green narrow leaves on a slender, clumping, 20cm high plant, this is naturally smaller in stature than most of our species but complements the larger plants well.
The flowers are small, but unique in their colouring, and are of such a deep and intense shade of violet that they appear to be black. The anthers in this colour form are yellow.
This is a restricted endemic of Yunnan in China fully hardy (it grows at up to 3,500m) and good in the peat garden. It has been confused with R. alpina which is a totally different species.
