Zagrosia

In 1998 Franz Speta proposed that the loose agglomeration of small, blue-flowered plants all regarded as Scilla, could be more logically split into several, naturally grouped genera.

 

It appears that the genus Scilla is just an artificial group of many, very different, blue-flowered plants which in fact have different evolutionary origins.

 

The new genera are not accepted by some authorities, others accept some of the new genera, but not all.

 

Zagrosia: Named for the Zagros mountains in present-day Iran. This is related to Othocallis, Fessia and, apparently to Hyacinthus, but after flowering the scapes remain rigid and carry dry, papery seed capsules.
